Contains papers of the Rives family of "Castle Hill," Albemarle County, Va. The bulk of the collection consists of the papers, 1849-1957, of Sarah Catherine (Macmurdo) Rives (1833-1909), and her daughter, Sarah Landon Rives (1874-1957). Sarah Catherine Rives' papers consist of a commonplace book, 1849-1854, containing verse, and correspondence, 1908- 1934, regarding the settlement of her estate. Sarah Landon Rives' papers include correspondence, 1881-1957, with family and friends primarily concerning family news and the disposition of personal property at "Castle Hill"; school materials, 1888-1890, from the Keswick School in Albemarle County; and assorted sketches and lists, 1923-1947, of portraits painted by Sarah Landon Rives. Also in the collection are the papers of Judith Page (Walker) Rives (1802-1882), wife of the politician and diplomat William Cabell Rives (1793-1868), consisting of a typescript copy of an 1861 autobiography written for her grandchildren, and correspondence, 1870, concerning agricultural operations at "Castle Hill"; and the papers of Am'elie Louise (Rives) Chanler Troubetzkoy (1863-1945) including correspondence, 1873- 1941, with friends and family mostly regarding family news and activities, miscellaneous sketches, 1874-1880, from her study of mechanical drawing at the Academy of Design in Mobile, Ala., and legal documents concerning the mental state of her first husband, John Armstrong Chanler (1862-1935). Other items include genealogical notes concerning the Macmurdo, Potts, Rives, and Walker families, and materials on "Castle Hill."
